Charities Bill Introduced

5 Jul 2012 Denise Copeland    Last updated: 13 Aug 2014

NICVA welcomes the introduction of the Charities Bill into the Assembly on 2 July 2012 the second stage of which will hopefully take place when the Assembly returns in September.

It is intended that this Bill will amend the wording of Section 3 of the Charities Act in relation to the public benefit requirement for charities and to transfer certain functions from the Department for Social Development to the Charity Commission.

The Committee for Social Development is calling on any organisation or individual with an interest in this consultation to submit written evidence to the Committee by 28 September 2012.

Once royal assent has been granted, the Charity Commission will carry out a public consultation on its guidance for the public benefit requirement - perhaps early next year. This will hopefully see the register of charities being established in the autumn of next year.

For more detailed information on the passage of this reform, please see below or download the NICVA briefing paper at the bottom of this webpage.
