Getting your finances in order

21 May 2012     Last updated: 20 Jun 2014

Sector Matters is about to begin its second year of delivering the Building Financial Capability in the Age Sector project with Charity Bank. This project offers financial health checks for organisations who work with older people.

“The support and advice that Engage With Age received from the Charity Bank project were invaluable in guiding us towards a more efficient and responsive financial system for the organisation. We found the detailed analysis and assessment of our financial governance provided by the project consultant very helpful, as it reassured us that our systems are fit for purpose, but also highlighted how we could improve. Thank you Sector Matters.”

What does building financial capacity involve?

As part of the project, Sector Matters will:

  1. Carry out a review of your financial planning and budgeting; accounting systems; reporting; internal controls; income management; and staff and committee skills
  2. Draw up an action plan in response to the review
  3. Deliver four days of remedial work free of charge. This can range from designing and delivering bespoke training; hands on support in developing your accounting system eg Sage; improvement of general financial processes etc.

The project is funded by Atlantic Philanthropies and aims to build the capacity of the organisations within the Age Sector, help them to understand their finances and sustainability issues, and help them to release more time to carry out key functions, ie delivering to and on behalf of older people.

Resources

Alongside the delivery of the project, Sector Matters has developed a package of resources, in the form of templates, to ensure groups have sound financial management tools.

These templates have been approved by CIPFA and allow groups to manage all internal financial processes properly. They include, for example, reconciliations, debtor and creditor controls. These can be downloaded below.
