NJC Payscales - trade union members vote for industrial action

With no agreement in the current pay dispute between the employers' and trade union sides of the NJC (National Joint Council), over 1.2 million local government employees in NI, England and Wales will go on strike on 10 July 2014.

The NJC pay dispute continues over the 1% pay increase offered by the employers' side of the NJC (National Joint Council) in March 2014.  Members of GMB, NIPSA, Unison and Unite trade unions rejected the 1% increase offered and balloted members on potential industrial action.  The majority of members in each union voted in favour of industrial action.

A 24 hour strike is planned for 10 July 2014 and GMB are estimating that it could be 'the second biggest dispute ever'. In response to the confirmed industrial action the Local Government Association stated, 'This strike will not change the pay offer we have made, but it will mean those who take part lose a day's pay.'

For organisations in our sector who use NJC payscales, this means that until agreement is reached, the payscales from April 2013 remain in place.
