Tenant Empowerment Event

In conjunction with Housing Rights Service NICVA recently hosted the first in a series of events looking at the Social Housing Reform Programme being undertaken by the Department for Social Development.

This event focused on the Tenant Participation and Empowerment aspects of the reform programme and was well attended by many representatives from Tenant Panels of a range of Housing Associations as well as people from across the sector.

The event was opened by Nicola McCrudden from Housing Rights Service who set the scene by outlining their work in the area before Laura O’Dowd from Supporting Communities NI provided an overview of the current situation in Northern Ireland in respect of tenant participation, and the best examples from elsewhere in the United Kingdom.  Laura finished by challenging the Department on what should be included in the final strategy.

Attendees were also briefed by Stephanie O’Neill from the Department on the work they have undertaken to date before posing questions on what people would like to see in the final strategy before we closed with a question and answer session to our panel of experts.

The presentations given by both Supporting Communities and the Department are available below.

The next event this series takes place at NICVA on the 29th September and focuses on Rent, Regulation and Inspection, for more information or to book click here.
