Newcastle Lions Club is a voluntary, charitable organisation that aims to meet the needs of the community in the Newcastle and surrounding area. The group, which is part of the largest voluntary organisation in the world, was established in 1984 and takes an interest in the civic, social, cultural, educational, health and moral welfare of the local community.
It aims to identify and target the people who need the most help by liaising with other groups and statutory organisations.
It is inclusive of the entire community and in particular those who are socially isolated by disability, education, age or social background.
The main focus of the Lions Club is to organise activities that will benefit the whole community. It also organises fundraising events and all funds raised are used for charitable purposes in service to the local and international communities.
In recent months Newcastle Lions has been engaged in projects designed specifically to encourage intergenerational work and to encourage community pride and improve the quality of life through people working together as volunteers.
Many of the groups that we work with are already struggling under the present government cutbacks. This will give rise to many problems in our community. This highlights the need and the urgency that Voluntary organisations such as Newcastle Lions Club are supported in their work.
We are currently on a recruitment drive to increase our capacity as we look to a future where our communities will be relying more and more on groups such as ours to provide the essential services that are currently under threat.
The Vital Links project is part-financed by the European Union's European Regional Development Fund through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE III) managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. The Special EU Programmes Body is the Managing Authority for the European Union's PEACE III Programme.
