Dormant Accounts Consultation - NICVA's response
NICVA has been following the dormant accounts initiative since it was first formally introduced in the Chancellor's pre-budget statement on December 2005. NICVA welcomes this opportunity to respond to the Consultation on Spending Priorities.
This response has been informed by consultation with NICVA's membership via a mailing to all our members (1,000 approx) and articles published on our websites: www.communityni.org,www.granttracker.org and www.nicva.org. The online articles on the consultation were viewed over
700 times.
In its response to the dormant accounts fund consultation NICVA is proposing a range of options for how the money could be used. Among the options are:
- A Community Facilities Energy Scheme linked to the campaign for a Green New Deal to enable community facilities to improve their energy efficiency and therefore reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills.
- A Community Assets Fund to help put disused public buildings to good use by voluntary and community organisations.
- A Children's Bank to be established in disadvantaged areas to encourage saving by and for young people.
- Dormant account money also could be used to develop a fundraising campaign to encourage individuals to leave a gift to charity in their will.
