Tackling educational disadvantage – A seminar for Community Activists

Report after report has highlighted that educationally we fail too many of our children, yet the problems persist.  NICVA is organising a special seminar to explore the issue and see what action we can take to help increase educational equality and improve attainment levels.

Most recently a working group of head teachers, educational administrators, academics and community activists led by former MLA Dawn Purvis highlighted the issue of the educational underachievement of Protestant working class boys.

Their subsequent ‘Call to Action’ asks some serious questions and proposes interesting recommendations on how to fix our education system; recommendations that could improve the system for all of our young people.

While the Working Group’s report focuses on Protestant working class boys it recognises that educational disadvantage is a much wider issue and the working group is keen to broaden the debate and discuss the impact of educational disadvantage in communities right across Northern Ireland.

Interest in this issue is already high among those working in the voluntary and community sector, as many work daily with the manifestations of educational underachievement.

With that in mind NICVA is organising a special seminar for community activists to explore the issue and see what action we can take to help increase educational equality and improve the attainment levels of our young people.  Information from this session will also feed into a range of meetings with departmental officials and other relevant decision makers.

Lunch will be provided after the event.

Copies of the working group's 'Call to Action' and summary document can be downloaded below.

Getting here and Parking

NICVA has a number of free parking spaces available for those attending events. Unfortunately these can't be reserved and are available on a first come basis. NICVA's spaces are clearly marked and we would ask that visitors only use spaces allocated to NICVA when attending an event.

Parking is also available on Duncairn Gardens and surrounding areas within close walking distance. NICVA is also a short walk from Yorkgate Train Station and you can easily catch a bus from the city centre (no 1D) direct to Duncairn Gardens, or (no 61 and 64) to Cityside Centre (a few minutes walk).
