Many people in our sector confuse marketing with promotion. The difference is that while promotion is about press releases, advertising and leaflet distribution, marketing involves knowing what to put in these promotional tools to get the most interest.
Marketing is about understanding the people you want to reach out to. It’s about asking them what they want from your services. It’s about finding out who else is reaching out to the same people and what you need to do differently to be seen and heard above everyone else who is trying to do the same thing.
Good marketing can help you say the right things to the right people in the right way to get the right result, whether you want to increase fundraising potential, increase volunteer numbers or maket more people aware of the services you offer.
Marketing is becoming more and more important for voluntary and community organisations. Organisations in the sector are having to be more creative in developing ways to secure funding. Many write to companie. Others develop products or services that they can charge for. However, competition is fierce and those who market their services well will be more likely to thrive.
NICVA is running a marketing awareness seminar for voluntary and community sector organisations. Not-for-profit Marketing Essentials will be delivered by IMS, a professional marketing outsourcing consultancy that specialises in working with small businesses and not-for-profit organisations.
