Active Citizenship and Community Relations
NICVA has organised a series of seminars with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to explore linkages between a strong and vibrant civil society and the development of improved relations between the two communities in Northern Ireland, including civic participation and volunteerism.
The seminars will also ask some fundamental and difficult questions such as whether or not civil society is sufficiently prepared, resourced and aware of the role it is expected to play. As many commentators have suggested, civil society is no less immune from the prejudices and divisions that blight the rest of society in Northern Ireland and in some cases it might be said to be exacerbating them.
At each of the seminars two leading figures from their respective fields will present their perspectives on active citizenship and community relations.
The first seminar in the series – Public Participation - takes place at NICVA from 12.30pm to 2.00pm on 15 January 2008. It will explore how much the conflict in Northern Ireland has precluded or influenced individuals from becoming more active citizens. It also will look at the cultural and historical differences in Northern Ireland compared to the rest of the UK, in relation to individuals becoming active and political citizens.
