Making Policy Work for You

Policy is a key function of the voluntary and community sector. It’s an important way of helping organisations achieve their aims and objectives meet the needs of the people and communities they represent and yet it is often perceived as complex, confusing and well… boring! This training session aims to change all that.

Answering questions such as; where does policy come from? what should a good consultation look like? how does government develop policy? what happens to all those responses? what do I need to know to respond to policy consultations, this exciting new training session aims to equip participants with the information and skills to get involved in the policy process in a more productive and positive way.

What does the session involve?

The session is fully participative using a mixture of input, discussions and questions and answer sessions with policy experts. The introduction to the day will focus on the current policy climate. A session on Policy Development in Government will be facilitated by Tom Reid from the Policy Innovation Unit of OFMDFM. There will also be input from experienced policy workers in the sector about what works and what doesn’t work.

What will I learn?

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Describe where policy comes from.
  • Understand how government develops policy.
  • Outline the key skills necessary to respond to policy.
  • Critically examine the policy function of your organisation.
  • Highlight examples of good practice in policy development and responding to policy.

Who should attend?

The training is aimed all at voluntary and community organisations. You should register to attend if your organisations has a policy role and you want to know how to do this more effectively, or if you have a limited policy capacity and want to find out about the policy development process with a view to getting more involved.

All courses are free of charge and include lunch and all training materials. The limit for each day is 20 participants.
