Ever read something, or heard about it at a conference and thought “I must find out a bit more about that?”
This series of three seminars aims to provide organisations with information on a wide range of policy issues which impact on the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland.
The seminars will examine popular concepts that we all know exist, know are important, have probably referred to but have never really understood the meaning of. They are aimed at all voluntary and community organisations that have an interest in policy.
Friday 29 September 10.30 -12.30
Hey Big Spender?
David Gavaghan, Strategic Investment Board
Seamus McAleavey, NICVA
Northern Ireland infrastructure is getting a £16billion face lift. The Investment Strategy and Economic Vision say that schools, hospitals and roads will benefit. Good news, right? But which schools, which hospitals, which roads? Who makes the decisions and will this massive investment make any difference to the way we live in NI? This seminar will examine the Northern Ireland Investment Strategy and the vision for the future of Northern Ireland that drives it. It will discuss how issues important to the sector like social inclusion, urban and rural development, the creation of a shared future, targeting social need and anti-poverty and equality will be affected by the investment?
Friday 17 November 10.30 - 12.30
Paying for peace.
Adrian McNamee SEUPB
Michael Wardlow, NICIE and the Community Relations Council
We have all heard the criticisms of the now infamous buses and by-passes for peace. The implication being that how does a new bus contribute to peace building, but is it as simple as that? Can a strong economy help promote a peaceful society and what can we learn about the relationship between the two as we move into negotiating what happens when the current peace programme ends?
Friday 8 December 10.30 -12.30
Selling off the family silver? Public Private Partnerships
Jonathan Swallow,
David Gavaghan, Strategic Investment Board.
What do we mean by public private partnerships or finance? Are they really a means to better, cost effective public services and what long term impact will they have on our economy.
