The Management Development Programme was a key piece of work for NICVA. In order to understand the lessons we could gain from it we commissioned two evaluation reports.

The management development programme has been a great success and although the funding for it has now ended it has left a lasting legacy in the voluntary and community sector, as well has improving individuals' effectiveness and organisations' performance.

Between October 2003 and March 2007 686 managers and over 300 organisations in the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland participated in this programme. It has promoted employee development within the sector and has developed transferable skills within the sector and so helped to build capacity, management skills and competencies within the sector.

NICVA evaluation

The vast majority of the 686 participants on the NICVA Management Development Programme have greatly benefited from their investment in training.

These benefits have been on three levels:

  • personally,
  • organisationally and
  • sectorally.

Many reported newly learnt or improved management skills with 83% stating they had improved a lot, considerably or somewhat. Significantly 71.4% reported that their organisations have been improved and changed as a result of their participation and learning.

It is evident that the impact it has had will be experienced and felt in the sector at large. With such a large number of organisations reporting improved performance this has surely made the sector more professional and effective in what it does meeting the needs of local communities.

Locus evaluation

Locus Management were commissioned by NICVA to undertake a qualitative evaluation of the Management Development programme (MDP) to qualify the broad impact the Management Development Programme has made at an organisational and sectoral level.

More specifically, Locus was briefed to ensure that evaluation efforts focused on:

  • Determining the impact of the NICVA Management Development Programme on a range of organisations which have participated.
  • Commenting on the wider impact that the NICVA Management Development Programme has had on the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland.
