The Opportunity of a Lifetime? Anti-Poverty Strategy: Information and Discussion Sessions

The Anti-Poverty Strategy, Lifetime Opportunities, was launched by the Secretary of State, Peter Hain, in NICVA on 13 November. Now that the sector has had some time to digest the document, NICVA has organised a series of sessions to examine the content of the strategy and facilitate discussion on what it might mean for communities and people throughout NI. Everything you ever wanted to know about policy but were afraid to ask!

Three more sessions in our popular series of seminars which aim to provide organisations with information on a wide range of policy issues which impact on the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland. The seminars will examine popular concepts that we all know exist, but have never really understood the meaning of. They are aimed at all voluntary and community organisations that have an interest in policy.

1. Friday 20 April, 10.30-12.30 I Fought the Law.
2. Thursday 24 May, 10. 30 -12.30 The future of Section 75.
3. Friday 28 September, 10.30-12.30 The Anatomy of Government II.

All the seminars will be held in NICVA, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast.

Know Your Ps from Your Qs

With more idea about the outcome of the RPA, community planning developments and the prospect of devolved government, now is a good time to consider the importance of lobbying. In 2007 NICVA is offering a further series of lobbying courses to help participants engage with decision-makers and discover how to effect positive change for the most vulnerable members of society. They will be held in cooperation with North Down Community Network, Oakleaf Rural Community Network and North Antrim Community Network.

Making Policy Work for You

Policy is a key function of the voluntary and community sector. It’s an important way of helping organisations achieve their aims and objectives and meet the needs of the people and communities they represent, and yet it is often perceived as complex, confusing and well ... boring!

This training session aims to change all that.

Answering questions such as; where does policy come from? what should a good consultation look like? how does government develop policy? what happens to all those responses? what do I need to know to respond to policy consultations? this exciting training session aims to equip participants with the information and skills to get involved in the policy process in a more productive and positive way.
