'Divided Societies: does civil society bridge them or bear them?' The events of NICVA's 2003 annual conference.
Speakers Frances McCandless, Ted Cantle and Kumi Naidoo addressed an audience of 150 people at NICVA’s 'Divided Societies' conference on 14 October 2003 at the Armagh City Hotel.
NICVA's Director of Policy, Frances McCandless, presented a challenging opening speech on development and division in Northern Ireland. The full speech is available below.

Kumi Naidoo is a well-respected speaker and Chief Executive Officer of CIVICUS, the civil society world membership body. Ted Cantle is known for his role on the Community Cohesion Review Team which produced the Cantle report in 2001 after the summer riots in a number of northern towns and cities in England. Both speakers shared insights from their own experiences of living and working in divided societies. The powerpoint presentation that accompanied Ted Cantle's speech is available below.

Panel Discussion
The afternoon discussion was prompted by questions from the floor to a panel involving Duncan Morrow from the Community Relations Council, Jenny Pearce, Department of Peace Studies at Bradford University, Geraldine Keys from FOCUS, Omagh, Neil Jarman from the Institute of Conflict Research, Kumi Naidoo and Ted Cantle.
Exhibition
Businesses and voluntary and community groups shared an exhibition space which conference delegates could browse throughout the day.
