No one should be left behind by the development of information communications technology (ICT). Seamus McAleavey, NICVA Chief Executive, emphasises the importance of the upcoming NICVA ICT Conference. (Exerpt from the November issue of SCOPE.)
The recently published Taskforce report , featured in the upcoming November edition of SCOPE magazine , recommends that an ICT strategy for the voluntary and community sector be developed.
NICVA Chief Executive, Seamus Mc Aleavey, agrees: “The developments in information communications technology can be harnessed to help almost any organisation deliver its activities better. We live in an information society, communication is fast and our sector has to be up to speed. We need to consider the best way to access broadband, promote our organisations’ information, services and activities. Ecommerce can be made to work for voluntary groups too .”
“NICVA is working on an internet portal that the whole sector can use collectively whilst maintaining each organisation’s own individual identity. We are thinking about how best to purchase group broadband and other services to help cut costs for everyone. We all need to think about how we can use the available technology to spread the benefits to the greatest number of people. No one should be left behind .”
“Don’t think for a minute that ICT is a matter for the techies alone because it’s not; it’s for directors, service managers, information and policy workers. They need to engage in the developments and apply the learning to their organisations. NICVA’s latest State of the Sector survey will try to find out the current state of play in the sector to inform the development of any strategy that may develop from the Taskforce report. Voluntary and community groups need to put more than a toe in the water – the NICVA ICT Conference on Wednesday 24 November 2004 is a good place for them to start ”.
