The Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action is dismayed that the government has raided another £675 million from good causes to pay for the London Olympics.

It was commenting on today’s announcement by Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State, that the money will be taken from the Lottery to meet some of the shortfall in a bill now totalling £9.3 billion.

“Northern Ireland charities could lose £20 million or more, on top of what has already been diverted to pay for the Olympics in 2012,” said Paula Reynolds, director of member services.

“We are aware that the Government has talked about assurances that the voluntary and community sector will not suffer. But groups in Northern Ireland are already losing money from previous raids. We will take a lot of convincing that charities here can be protected when such a large sum of money is being diverted from good causes.”

NICVA has already written to all MPs on this subject and received cross-party support opposing the raiding of Lottery funds for the Olympics.
