A Modern Regional Policy for the United Kingdom (NICVA Briefing Paper)
The April issue ofEuroFlash looks at the document 'A Modern Regional Policy for the United Kingdom':
Background
This document is published by the UK Government and led by the Treasury, DTI and Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. It intends to consult on the UK’s position before encountering other member EU states on the use of Structural Funds and the future of European Regional Policy which basically was missing prior to the Structural Funds.
This isn’t a series of National Policies as the EU is one zone. It is normal that there are economic discrepancies between its zones which occur from the centre outwards to those that suffer most on the periphery.
Sentiments of the Document
NICVA endorses the support for devolution, democratic accountability and local decision-making as argued in the paper. The document recognises that the delivery of Structural funds has been uneconomical.
