This month's round up
Welcome to April's NICVAnews. Well, the election has been and gone and now it's time to get the elected representatives to take note of the needs of the voluntary and community sector. Included with this issue are ten key policy demands that could easily keep them occupied over the next few months. We aim to keep our readers up to date with information on new legislation and best practice, and this month there's a useful charity law update including details of the new Community Interest Company structure, plus a guide to best practice in charity governance, with useful tips on getting the most from your organisation's Chair. There's also news this month about measures to improve the work/life balance, with changes to maternity and carer's leave.
As producers of some great publications, why don't you consider entering this year's SCOPE Communication Awards, which recognise good practice in communications with, among others, awards for best annual report, information leaflet and training materials. In all there are nine categories with a new one this year, excellence in campaigning. The Awards are not about big budget productions and large and small organisations have an equal chance of winning. On a related note if your organisation has trouble getting your story heard, why not fill in the enclosed media register form. The register aims to be a comprehensive list of media spokespeople in voluntary and community organisations and could help steer journalists in your direction.
Finally, fears are growing of an imminent raid by government on vital lottery funds to support the mounting costs of the 2012 Olympics. If the government goes for the easy option of plundering the Lottery, Northern Ireland will lose another £20 million and charities will suffer. Please sign the online petition http//petitions.pm.gov.uk/Defend-funding to help stop the attack.
