NICVA's response to the consultation on the gender strategy.
NICVA recommends that the proposed gender strategy should be replaced by a women’s strategy that implements the government’s commitments under Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Beijing Platform of Action, with an additional focus on multiple identities and inequalities suffered by the most marginalised women and the need to work for more equality of life chances.
NICVA argues that the current proposals betray a misunderstanding of equality of opportunity and Section 75 and therefore suggests that the very real issues that affect young men’s mental health and educational underachievement would be better tackled through health and education strategies and services.
