The second of this year’s members’ days, entitled Managing Relationships, was a huge success, with the majority of participants telling us that they really enjoyed it and got plenty of useful advice from it.
Frances McCandless, Director of Policy at NICVA, commenced the day with an overview of the key elements, and anticipated timetable, of the new Charities Act as well as highlighting the most pertinent elements of the Companies Act which are already in force.
She then outlined developments in good practice in governance giving an update on the Code of Good Governance as well as the National Occupational Standards for Trustees and Management Committees. She also outlined wider policy issues for the sector including the latest in the Review of Public Administration and the latest in funding updates.
The second of the morning presentations concentrated on policy and procedures to manage staff with Susan Lavery, who is in charge of human resources at NICVA, outlining the latest legislation including maternity and paternity rights, sexual harassment and dispute resolution procedures. She also highlighted the key policies and procedures that all organisations should have in place.
"Very enjoyable, informative sessions with enthusiastic facilitators" - Trish Hegan, The Spirit of Enniskillen Trust
Our members then got to attend a workshop before lunch on either managing staff performance, managing the message or managing the committee. In the afternoon they had a choice of managing behaviour, child protection procedures and guidelines or managing conflict.
Judging from the evaluation forms the participants are going to go back to their organisations and review their policies and procedures, examine how they communicate and be well equipped for dealing with conflict.
