£15 million Modernisation Fund – more details

By Feargal O'Kane from NICVA

It may be the middle of the holiday season but people flocked to a meeting organised by the Department for Social Development to give details of the new £15 million Modernisation Fund for capital works.

So many people arrived at the event on 31 July that they could not get into the room to hear a presentation from Jack O’Connor from DSD on the Modernisation Fund Capital Programme.

Unable to attend?

For those who were unable to hear or to attend at all, we’ve gathered together the slides and we also asked Neil Irwin from NICVA and Jack O’Connor from DSD to give a video summary of the new information.

About the Modernisation Fund

The £15 million fund is available to support capital projects. Its objectives include activities which improve:

  • partnership and collaboration;
  • income generation and/or cost reduction;
  • improved access to services, especially for people with a disability;
  • good relations within and between communities;
  • the delivery of services and facilities in support of disadvantaged children and young people (0-24 years).

There are three funding streams for the £15 million:

  1. Pilot Infrastructure Scheme (£9 million): supporting applications with a grant value of between £300,000 and £1.5 million per project.
  2. Community Facilities Improvement Scheme (£3 million): to improve facilities to allow better service delivery and access to services.
  3. Small Capital Grants Scheme (£3 million): to undertake minor works or purchase assets in order to improve the sector’s ability to deliver a better service to the community. The individual project value is between £20,000 and £100,000.

Speaking after the event Neil Irwin, Member Services Manager at NICVA said:

The response to this information was no surprise to us at NICVA. The awards are so open to organisations both large and small - with awards ranging from £20,000 to £1.5 million available.

We would encourage everyone to loook at the programme as soon as possible due to the short time before the 19 October deadline.
