A bunch of do-gooders? Bleeding hearts? A peace industry paid for by Europe?
So what is the voluntary and community sector?
New research by NICVAprovides many of the answers. The sector is made up of 4,500 organisations employing 29,000 people - that's more employees than the construction industry and more than transport, storage and communication. The workforce is much bigger than in agriculture.
Annual income is estimated at £615 million per year. Contrary to recent media reports, less than 10% of that income comes from the European Union.
Come and find out the full picture when NICVA releases State of the Sector IV, based on exhaustive research of finance, staffing, volunteers and all other aspects of the voluntary and community sector.
The 56 page report also presents the attitudes of the general public to charities and the views of people working in the sector on topical and important issues.
State of the Sector reports have appeared every three years, so the latest publication allows us to see changing trends over an extended period.
State of the Sector IV will be launched at 2.00pm on Monday 21 November at 2.00pm in the NICVA offices, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast. Please let me know if you would like to attend.
Best wishes
