Award celebrates the every day achievements made possible by broadband technology and calls for entries from the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland.

Broadband Britain Challenge A new challenge has been issued to broadband users in the voluntary sector. The Broadband Britain Challenge has been launched to find the brightest ADSL broadband users – people who have bettered their lives or the lives of others through the use of ADSL broadband technology at work, in education or elsewhere.

There are seven award categories, one of which is dedicated to voluntary, charity and not-for-profit organisations. The Challenge is an opportunity for voluntary organisations in Northern Ireland to promote any activities they perform that are enabled by broadband technology.

Emma Gibson, Application Advisor for Northern Ireland for the Broadband Britain Challenge Awards explains, “The sector which NICVA supports and represents is considered one of the most forward thinking in the UK , and rightly so. Let’s also put Northern Ireland ’s community and voluntary sector at the forefront of internet technology in the UK " .

"Broadband internet access increases opportunities for all individuals and organisations to communicate, virtually anytime and anywhere. I would encourage all ADSL broadband users in Northern Ireland to enter this Challenge and share the ways they have bettered their lives or the lives of others ".

The Challenge is about "gathering broadband success stories from ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things with broadband " to inspire the rest of the UK and demonstrate what broadband could do for them.

An overall Area Champion for Northern Ireland will be announced at an entertainment event in Belfast on 31 July. They will then be flown to the UK for a VIP ceremony in London on 12 September, where the UK Champions will receive a prestigious trophy – followed by a celebration party.

"I am determined to see the UK Champion of the Broadband Britain Challenge Awards travel back to Northern Ireland in September with their trophy !” says Emma.

The broadband revolution is gathering pace in the UK, with 2 million households recorded in May 2003 as using ‘always on’ internet services. Some areas in Northern Ireland are still unable to access the service, but you can contact Emma from the Broadband Britain Challenge for advice about what actions you can take to introduce broadband to your area.
