CONSULTATION ON NEW TSN THE WAY FORWARD — TOWARDS AN ANTI-POVERTY STRATEGY
In response to the above consultation, I attach a position paper setting out our views on what would be required for an anti-poverty strategy for Northern Ireland. As you will see, the position is supported by the 173 (since increased to 177) organisations whose names are listed at the end.
As the umbrella body for the voluntary and community sector, NICVA has been involved with the TSN policy since its inception and has always argued that it been ineffective and did not constitute a proper anti-poverty strategy for a region which suffers from multiple deprivation compounded by sectarian division. NICVA was involved in the review of New TSN instigated in 2002 and had high hopes that the kind of anti-poverty strategy for which our members have been waiting might at last be forthcoming. The document launched at Easter this year did not fulfil any of those expectations.
For that reason, and because we and others have submitted numerous analyses over the years of what we consider to be the main steps necessary if government is serious about tackling poverty and social exclusion in Northern Ireland, we have decided to respond with this short document setting out our very basic principles and suggested actions.
We would be keen to meet with you to discuss our position further.
Yours sincerely
SEAMUS Mc ALEAVEY
