In 2004/5 more than 200 voluntary and community organisations supported the Enough Is Enough campaign which called for an effective strategy to end poverty in Northern Ireland. However, there is still no cross cutting strategy to tackle poverty. Join our campaign for an effective anti-poverty strategy.
In 2004/5 more than 200 voluntary and community organisations supported the Enough Is Enough campaign which called for an effective strategy to end poverty in Northern Ireland. Lifetime Opportunities – Government’s Anti-Poverty and Social Inclusion Strategy was published in 2006 by the then Secretary of State, Peter Hain.
However the Northern Ireland Executive, established in May 2007, has yet to adopt or replace the strategy. There is still no cross cutting strategy to tackle poverty. The recent Programme for Government and Budget did include a commitment to ‘develop a strategic delivery plan to ensure our anti-poverty strategy has maximum impact’.
NICVA and other representatives of the NGO Ministerial Forum on Poverty have decided to ask as many voluntary and community organisations as possible to sign a letter asking the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister to publish an anti-poverty strategy as a matter of urgency.
If your organisation would like to add your name to the letter and endorse the campaign for an effective anti-poverty strategy send an email to cathy.breslin@nicva.org before Monday 25 February.
