NICVA's marathon efforts raised £1,260 for Sunshine Foundation, Romania.
NICVA's staff entered two relay teams in this year's Belfast City Marathon on May Day bank holiday.
As well as having a lot of fun and satisfaction from completing the marathon, they also raised £1,260 for Sunshine Foundation Romania. Sunshine Foundation Romania is a small charity working in Transylvania which the staff have been supporting with Marathon sponsorship since 2003.
About Sunshine Foundation Romania
Sunshine Foundation Romania is a charitable organization, registered in Northern Ireland and enjoys the full support of the Romanian Child Protection Agency.
Sunshine Foundation Romania aims to significantly improve the lives and living conditions of children who have been abandoned by their birth families in oppressive and poorly managed orphanages.
Through the help of a small number of volunteers in N. Ireland and Romania, SFR will establish homes for small groups of up to a dozen children who currently live in overcrowded buildings, are rarely allowed to go outside and never have any visitors.
These children are denied any form of formal education due to their abandoned status, and are looked after by a limited number of unskilled and untrained staff. Through the work of the volunteers and the support of our sponsors, SFR is really making a difference to these children's lives.
Marie Williams, founder member and Charity Trustee of Sunshine Foundation Romania on collecting the cheque from the marathon teams said
"I am so grateful to the runners, for their continued support of Sunshine Foundation and the money couldn't have come at a better time as the charity is beginning a new building project to provide sheltered accommodation for those children that will soon be adults.
