While most of the staff were enjoying a well earned bank holiday break, for some of them the May Day holiday brought an opportunity to pound the streets in the Belfast City Marathon.

This year’s event featured two relay teams from NICVA, and while they had a lot of fun and satisfaction from completing the marathon, they had a more serious goal in mind; raising much needed funds for Sunshine Foundation Romania, a small charity which has built two homes for abandoned children in Transylvania.

The staff at NICVA have been supporting Sunshine Foundation Romania since 2003 when they ran their first marathon. To date they have raised over £3,500, not including the gift aid that the charity has been able to claim back on top of this. The staff also support this charity by donating good quality items to the annual jumble sale run by the Beragh group in Co Tyrone.

“the charity is indebted to all those who gave of their time and energy to raise money for the children”.

This year's marathon run raised £1130.50 for the charity. Marie Williams was delighted to receive the cheque saying that she couldn’t find the words to describe how delighted she felt at the continuous support that she has received from NICVA staff and their families and friends.

Sunshine is now planning for the children’s future after their stay in the home and is developing ‘move-on’ self contained accommodation which hopefully will be built next year.
