CSR update with Department of Education

NICVA has continued the series of meetings on the Comprehensive Spending Review.  The latest meeting provided the Department of Education an opportunity to discuss the current economic climate and the difficulties organisations are facing with over 50 people from across the voluntary and community sector.

John McGrath, the Deputy Secretary to the Department, gave a presentation outlining the projected budgetary requirements and the consequences for educational services – at a primary, secondary and tertiary level.

Faith centred organisations, local groups and international aid agencies were all represented in the meeting which ensured a wide ranging discussion covering many aspects of educational provision.

The meeting heard that the spending review will cover the four year period leading to 2015 rather than the more customary three year period.  It also revealed plans that the Department of Education has drawn up to ensure a well thought out and publicly informed Departmental budget.

The Deputy Secretary was keen to highlight the Minister and the Executives commitment to creating a more equitable education system while raising standards for all those who access the services provided. However fears were expressed that if wrong decisions were made that those most vulnerable would suffer disproportionately from any restriction in services and projects.

The next meetings, as part of the Vital Links Meet the Departments series, will be taking place on Wednesday 25 August with the OFMdFM.

To see which other meetings have been arranged, or to check for reports of meetings which have already happened, see Meet the Government Departments.
