Lagan Navigation Trust

It is the principle objective of the Lagan Navigation Trust to re-open the Lagan Navigation from Belfast Harbour to Lough Neagh, making it an asset that enriches the lives of millions of local people and overseas visitors. Lagan Navigation Trust are a not for profit organisation who will act as custodians for this major project.

From Belfast to Lough Neagh, the Lagan Navigation travels East to West, 27 miles with 27 locks, 20 road bridges, 12 footbridges and 1 Railway Bridge. It passes through three Local Government areas – Belfast, Lisburn & Castlereagh, Armagh Banbridge & Craigavon. A fifth of the population of Northern Ireland lives close to the Navigation and there are already more than a million visitors to the Navigation every year.

The Lagan Navigation was one of the most successful commercial navigations in Ireland and boasts the only flight of 4 locks (Union Locks) in the Irish waterway network. The Navigation’s canalised sections are one of the region’s best assets, passing through the cities of Belfast and Lisburn, through rolling countryside and picturesque villages, until it enters Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles.

The Lagan Navigation Trust actively seek to encourage partnerships with stakeholders and communities throughout the 27 mile stretch.
