Collaboration and Merger Newsletter Issue 2

By 2011 the Northern Ireland Administration will be cutting programmes and expenditure quite radically. Issue 2 of NICVA's Collaboration and Merger newsletter is now available as an aid to your discussions and forward planning.

In terms of the continuing impact of the recession, the main impact may still be to come. Whilst income will go down across a whole range of sources the biggest threat for many organisations will be the fallout from cuts to public expenditure. That is likely to begin quite soon after the UK General Election which must be held by 3 June 2010.

UK public expenditure is likely to be cut by 8% overall. Voluntary and community organisations will face both serious threat and some opportunity.

For those involved in the delivery of public services your costs, your efficiency and your effectiveness will be paramount. You must successfully argue your worth. Even then it will be difficult and there is a fear that our sector will suffer disproportionately high cuts as the services we provide may be seen as peripheral.

NICVA will lobby Government to guard against wholesale uncoordinated cuts delivered by public sector budget holders but we must recognise that whole funding schemes could disappear with lots of unintended consequences. It is important that you consider your organisation's future and actively consider and manage your options.

NICVA will keep you updated as and when we have new information.
