State of the Sector assesses how the voluntary and community sector is funded, how many people it employs and how many volunteers are involved with organisations.

State of the Sector V - Northern Ireland Voluntary and Community Sector Almanac 2009

Now in its fifth edition its contribution towards our understanding of the voluntary and community sector is as relevant as ever. As is discussed throughout the report the sector that exists today is very different to the one that was first examined 12 years ago in the first State of the Sector.

What's in it?

Overview: the basic facts of State of the Sector V and a wider discussion of the headline figures are included in this section.

Introduction: includes various definitions used to classify the voluntary and community sector. An outline of the different methodologies that have been employed to produce is also included in this section.

Profile: looks at the voluntary and community sector in its widest context and provides a breakdown of how the sector is structured in its activities and geographic remit.

Income: data on the sector's income for 2006/07 is presented in this section and it focuses on the nature and type of funding voluntary and community organisations receive.

Giving: this section looks at charitable giving in Northern Ireland and the ways in which the general public support the voluntary and community sector. This section is based on the Northern Ireland Giving Survey 2008.

Expenditure: this section is focused on the SORP categories of expenditure but additional analysis has been included of the amount spent on training, insurance and professional fees by the voluntary and community sector.

Assets: assets, liabilities and total funds are examined in this section. An assessment of the extent of reserve policies is also carried out.

Workforce: this section focuses on the paid staff that organisations in the voluntary and community sector rely on. There is a sub-sectoral analysis as well as an wider discussion about skills gaps and recruitment issues in the sector (taken from the Northern Ireland Voluntary and Community Sector Skills Survey.

Volunteers: this section looks at the scale of voluntary activity in sector. The analysis in this section is drawn from the Volunteer Development Agency's Its All About Time, Volunteering in Northern Ireland 2007 report.

Forecast: examines the results of a series of questions that were designed to test opinion and confidence across the sector against a range of different issues. Questions were taken from NCVO's Quarterly Charity Confidence Survey.
