Friends of the Cancer Centre, based at the heart of the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital, is Northern Ireland’s leading cancer charity working to support patients and their families.

Each year, Friends of the Cancer Centre puts over £1 million into the Cancer Centre to ensure patients who attend the centre from across Northern Ireland get the best possible treatment and care.

Friends of the Cancer Centre does this by focusing its work on three key areas: clinical care, patient comforts and research.  Through these areas Friends of the

Cancer Centre can make a real and meaningful difference to the lives of thousands of patients as well as support the Cancer Centre’s staff.  From funding 31 additional members of staff including doctors and specialist nurses, purchasing vital medical equipment and offering patients small comforts such as free tea and coffee throughout the hospital, to investing over £500,000 every year into locally led research through its partnership with Queen’s University.  Friends of the Cancer Centre is committed to supporting patients, families and staff when they need it most.

All of this wouldn’t be possible without the fantastic support of people across Northern Ireland who do incredible things to raise money for the charity every day.  From taking part in the charity’s annual events such as the upcoming Belvoir Walk, Dragon Boat Race and Slieve Donard Challenge, to hosting fundraisers of their own, the charity is powered by the generosity of its supporters.

Colleen Shaw, chief executive of Friends of the Cancer Centre, said:

The charity plays a really important role in the hospital and we’re now supporting more local patients than ever before.  The charity has grown considerably in the last few years and being a member of NICVA has been a great support throughout.”

This year, the Cancer Centre marks the 10th anniversary of its opening and over the last decade the work of the Belfast Trust in the Cancer Centre has been supported by Friends of the Cancer Centre.  In the last year alone the charity has put an incredible £1.4 million into the hospital to support patient care.  To mark the 10th anniversary milestone, Friends of the Cancer Centre brought some the amazing staff in the Cancer Centre together to show their support for patients in this moving video.  Watch the video below:
