New economic masterclass series provides unique platform

The masterclasses will seek to provide attendees with current analyses of specific issues and provide innovative ways of examining and addressing topical issues. Each class will be delivered in a participatory way and on the basis that ‘there is no such thing as a stupid question’.

The masterclasses will provide voluntary and community organisations with an excellent opportunity to develop their capacity and engage in contemporary economic policy debates. They will also provide a unique platform for discussion and exchanging ideas. 

Civil society's role in influencing the global economy will take place on Friday 21 September 2012 from 10.00am - 12.30pm.  Speakers at this session will be Professor Jan Aart Scholte, Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation (CSGR), University of Warwick, and Jim Metcalf, Carnegie UK Trust Practice and Development Manager. Read more and book here.

Examining Corporation Tax will take place on Tuesday 30 October 2012 from 10.00am - 12.30pm. Speakers at this session will be Dr Graham Gudgin, Honorary Research Associate at the Centre for Business Research, and Dr Graham Brownlow, Lecturer in Economics in the Queen's University Management School. Read more and book here.

Moving Northern Ireland towards a low carbon economy will take place on Friday 23 November 2012 from 10.00am - 12.30pm. Speakers at this session will be Dr John Barry, Reader, School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy and Associate Director, Institute for a Sustainable World, Queen's University Belfast, and Professor Samuel Fankhauser, Co-Director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics. Read more and book here.

Making work pay — delivering a living wage will take place on Friday 25 January 2013 from 10.00am - 12.30pm. Speakers at this session will be Kayte Lawton, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research and Dr Esmond Birnie, Chief Economist with PwC in Northern Ireland. Read more and book here.

Second annual economic conference

In addition to the masterclass series, the Centre for Economic Empowerment will be hosting its second annual conference in December — Creating the good economy through job creation. The conference will seek to examine in detail how we might boost job creation and further develop the good economy.
