NICVA here to help Trustees all year round

NICVA is celebrating Trustees' week this week. We want to recognise and value the important and yet often unnoticed work that Trustees do across Northern Ireland to lead organisations and ensure that they are well governed. 

The amount of time, expertise and effort that well over 50,000 people give to the sector as Trustees is truly immense.

We would like to highlight five things, one for each day during this special week, that NICVA does throughout the year to support Trustees in Northern Ireland.

One: Our Trustee training series 

We provide training sessions all year round for trustees as part of our training calendar, some of which are free. This week we have a free session on Reviewing and Improving Governance as part of Trustees’ week (fully booked). We deliver training in lots of topics such as: Trustee responsibilities, risk assessment, GDPR, basic finance and being an effective chair – during the day and evening sessions. All our training can also be provided for your committee/board at a time and place that suits you. We will tailor the training session to best meet your needs.

Two: Our Governance and Charity Advice Team

We have three staff who are experts in their field and keep you up to date with all changes in charity and company law and best practice in governance. Denise Copeland is our Governance and Charity Advice Manager, Donna Semple and Michele Crilly are our Governance and Charity Advice Officers and they are the go-to team for all queries about governance. They work closely with hundreds of organisations each year to provide advice, guidance and practical support when needed. We are very fortunate to have such a strong team with real depth of knowledge, commitment and passion for our sector. The team have developed a wide range of advice notes giving practical guidance on topics of interest to Trustees.

Three: Code of Good Governance

Denise (along with Volunteer Now) provides secretariat to the Developing Governance Group that developed the Code of Good Governance, Governance Health Check, and the DIY Committee Guide website,-  all valuable tools to help you govern your organisation well. If you haven’t got your wee green “Code of Good Governance” booklet and Principles Poster then please get in touch to pick up your copies.

Four: Drafting and reviewing governing documents 

The team can help you as trustees ensure that your governing document is fit for purpose and up to date. We will work with you to ensure that your Objects clause sufficiently covers your current activities and that the governance arrangements are clearly laid out and reflective of what happens in practice.  There is a small charge for this service, but NICVA members get a 30% discount.

Five: CCNI Helper Group

We are here to help you with your online application for registering with the charity commission as well as completing your annual return. We provide advice and support over the phone, by email and in person. We have recently started to work more intensely with organisations in default with CCNI to help them complete their annual return while building their confidence and knowledge.

We are here to help  Trustees all year round – five days a week, 52 weeks a year. Our team will help you navigate the challenges you face and encourage you as you follow best practice.
