NICVA responds to Economic Strategy

NICVA’s submission to the draft Economic Strategy urges the Executive to do as much as possible to boost job creation and help people from socially deprived backgrounds into work.

Commenting on the submission NICVA Chief Executive, Seamus McAleavey stated:

"NICVA recognises that the status quo in economic development is not going to deliver the step change needed with regards to increased employment and higher standards of living in Northern Ireland.

With the more stringent public spending position and the small internal market that exists in Northern Ireland, it is correct to focus Northern Ireland’s Economic Strategy on developing an outward looking economy. However, the recession has had a significant impact on the labour market here and the Executive’s number one priority should be job creation.

In the longer term we think more priority needs to be given to ensuring the strategy does not lead to greater inequality, which can have a destabilising effect on the economy, and that it is genuinely sustainable. With this in mind NICVA considers that the Executive should also focus on achieving greater economic inclusion, reducing inequality and implementing the Green New Deal".

NICVA has also submitted a response to the draft Programme for Government consultation.
