What are you doing on May Day? The Belfast City Marathon is one of the biggest fundraising events in Northern Ireland, attracting runners of all abilities to raise money for their chosen charities.  NICVA staff have entered relay teams to the

Spurred on by their colleague Denise, a trustee of the charity who also volunteers every summer to work with the children, the staff (with the help of old colleagues) are entering two relay teams this year.

Earlier this year the charity set up online fundraising with mydonate, the free online fundraising service, which has enabled all of the participants to set up their own individual fundraising pages.

More on Sunshine Foundation Romania

Sunshine Foundation Romania is a recognised charity that seeks to improve the lives and living conditions of abandoned children from oppressive and poorly managed orphanages.

Sunshine is a very small, but highly effective charity. It has built two houses and two supported living apartments for children and young people rescued from the orphanages in Brasov County in Transylvania.  It also supports several families in outlying villages who do not have the means to support themselves.

The children in the Sunshine homes have physical, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties and the charity provides them with appropriate healthcare and education. Sunshine ensures that the children get to school each day — something which they are not entitled to, as the Romanian authorities think that they can get an education in the children’s home provided by a carer.  School is something which each and every one of these children loves.

Sunshine also runs a supported living programme for the transition to adulthood for the children that have now reached the age, but not the ability, to leave care. These vulnerable young adults will still require support and training to enable them to become independent adults.

The cost of running the four homes, along with transport costs to take the children to their various schools, is a substantial amount each month.  Sunshine Foundation Romania would be extremely grateful for every pound that is donated to support the children.
