Sustainable Development Goals Forum- What are the Key Asks?

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015 by 193 countries as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The UN urged all member states to develop national strategies on the SDGs. In NI, the Programme for Government is the mechanism used to measure progression towards the SDGs and a mapping exercise to link the Programme for Government to the SDGs was undertaken in early 2019.

NICVA established a Sustainable Development Goals Forum in 2019 and currently has a membership base of 18 organisations from the community and voluntary sector in response to the increasing urgency of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals agenda. Our Key Asks outlines the sector’s growing concern about the lack of integration and coordination on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Northern Ireland and advocates for action to mainstream the SDG commitments across government departments in partnership with other sectors.

What are the Key Asks?

  1. Develop an ambitious and well-resourced SDG Action Plan, with NI specific indicators led by The Executive Office and involving all government departments, to steer, implement, monitor, and report on the Goals. This action plan needs to emphasise the interlinked nature of the Goals and each department should have a Sustainable Development Goals lead/champion.

  1. Establish an inclusive and independent monitoring forum in which government and civil society organisations are fully represented, ensuring that civil society has an integral role in evaluating and reviewing progress.

  1. Ensure that all government policies, strategies and decisions align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including the next Programme for Government and local Council Community plans.

  1. Encourage broader participation the next National Voluntary Review on the SDGs, and include Goal 17 ‘Partnerships for the Goals’ in the response to reflect the importance of partnership working outside of government to achieving the SDGs.
