Who are the new Ministers at the Northern Ireland Office? #reshuffle

Picture of Karen Bradley MP, the new Northern Ireland Secretary

Karen Bradley MP was on Monday appointed as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Yesterday, Shailesh Vara MP was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State.

Karen Bradley has been the Conservative Party Member of Parliament for Staffordshire Moorlands since 2010 and was the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport since 2016. Prior to joining the Cabinet, she was a Minister in the Home Office after serving as a Lord Commissioner for the Treasury and Junior Whip. As a backbencher, she sat on the Work & Pensions Select Committee. Before entering politics, she worked as a chartered accountant and tax advisor.

Ms Bradley replaces James Brokenshire MP, who on Monday resigned as Secretary of State due to ill health.

As the UK Government reshuffle continued yesterday, Shailesh Vara MP [pictured here] replaced Chloe Smith MP as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office. Mr Vara has been the Conservative Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire since 2005 and during David Cameron's premiership served as Parliamentary Under Secretary at the Department for Work & Pensions and at the Ministry of Justice.

The NIO's spokesperson in the House of Lords, Lord Duncan, remains in post.

Top of the new Northern Ireland Secretary’s priorities will be re-establishing a talks process to restore the Northern Ireland Executive as the one-year anniversary of its collapse passes.
