Association of Talking Newspapers NI

Was formed in 1980 as an umbrella body for talking newspapers* in N Ireland. It represents, supports and promotes the work of members and provides a forum for discussion.

• runs a website, www.atnni.org.uk, which acts as a central access point for information on talking newspapers in NI (from 2016 it also runs a Facebook page).

• holds an annual meeting where invited speakers address issues of current relevance. Recent themes: • Attracting and retaining volunteers • New Charity Commission for NI • Ensuring quality • Demonstrations of equipment / software

• plays a strategic role in pressing for equality of access to all kinds of information for people with sight loss and print disabilities. 

• works closely with other voluntary bodies e.g. RNIB Northern Ireland, Talking News Federation; and has close links with public libraries.

• has a committee of 3 office bearers plus a maximum of 7 others, all elected annually; it meets 4 times a year to plan activities and respond to members’ needs.

*Talking newspapers comprise volunteers who make audio recordings of local newspapers for people who cannot access the printed version.
