Although the social benefits of the sector are widely documented, very often the economic impact of the sector is overlooked. In Northern Ireland the VSCE sector employs more than 53,000 people, with a further 240,000 estimated volunteers. The income of the sector is calculated at almost £730,000,000.
In addition to the impact to the economy of generating such significant revenue the sector also provides services and programmes that drive economic equality as well as lobbying policy makers for effective strategies.
Charitable organisations that provide transport services play a vital role in fighting against feelings of isolation and loneliness. Community transport services enable those who have poor mobility, don't have access to their own form of transport or live in areas with a poor public transport system, to travel freely and increase their level of independence.
