The Community Empowerment Programme builds stronger connections at the first cross border residential.

Earlier this month, NICVA’s first CEP Cross-Border Residential brought together 20 participants from across 12 community and voluntary organisations for two days of learning and connection in Cavan.

The Community Empowerment Programme (CEP) is being delivered as part of the Belfast PEACEPLUS Local Community Action Plan. This project is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB)

A space to build relationships and grow in confidence

One of the strongest impacts of the residential was the opportunity for people to step away from their day-to-day pressures - the combination of a supportive environment, shared experiences, and practical learning made it possible for people to build genuine connections, while also developing practical skills to support their work and volunteering.

A roundtable discussion of volunteers at the event

"At first when we all met, everyone was strangers. Now we are leaving we are exchanging numbers. Feels like we have all known each other years.”  - Mary - St James Farm

Learning that lasts

Glenn Millar and Debbie Hamill from Alternative Restorative Justice facilitated the afternoonA presentation from two volunteers workshop, providing a timely opportunity to explore restorative approaches to conflict resolution, and giving participants practical tools to help them manage challenging situations and communicate more effectively.

  • “If a situation ever arises, I know how to use the correct language and tone.”
  • “How to deescalate conflict is a big one for me.”

For many, simply attending the residential was a step outside their comfort zone, one that led to increased confidence, motivation and a renewed sense of purpose. Participants described the experience as engaging, valuable, and impactful, with many asking for more opportunities like this in the future.

  • “Fantastic opportunity to network with knowledgeable and committed people.”
  • “Great connections and friendships made.”
  • “Had a fantastic time, leaving feeling really empowered.”
  • “Leaving this trip feeling empowered, motivated and inspired.”
