Fundraising Regulator consults on The Code of Fundraising Practice
Celine McStravick, CEO NICVA, opened by welcoming The Fundraising Regulator staff back to NICVA to meet with our sector. Celine encouraged everyone to make the most of the support and resources that the Fundraising Regulator provide and to engage in the consultation.
Frances McCandless, CEO Charity Commission NI, reminded us of our responsibility as organisations to follow the Code of Fundraising Practice and urged boards of trustees to follow best practice. She emphasised the roles that fundraisers, staff, senior management teams and boards of trustees play to manage risk in this area in building and maintaining trust with the public.
Gerald Oppenheim, CEO Fundraising Regulator, outlined their strategic objectives and themes. Their key acheivements so far have been: the appointment of Head of Proactive Regulation and Projects, the launch of the Code review 2022-2025, joint safer giving campaigns, guidance on online fundraising and volunteers and closer working with other regulators.
"The Fundraising Regulator has a long-established relationship with the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action, and we are delighted to be in Belfast this week to partner on this special event launching the consultation on the Code of Fundraising Practice in Northern Ireland."
Gerald Oppenheim, CEO Fundraising Regulator
Code of Fundraising Practice
- Sets standards that apply to charitable fundraising
- Relevant to registered charities, exempt charities, third parties, and online fundraising platforms
- Underpins the system of voluntary self-regulation
- Used as a framework for assessing complaints
- Legal, open, honest and respectful
More information and advice about The Code can be found on the Fundraising Regulator website.
"The Code sets the standards that apply to fundraising carried out by all charitable institutions and third-party fundraisers in the UK, and as such it is vital that that our partners and colleagues across Northern Ireland lend their voices to the review of the Code. You do not need to be registered with the Fundraising Regulator to respond to the consultation and we look forward to hearing the views of those across Northern Ireland."
Lisa Caldwell, Fundraising Regulator Board Member for Northern Ireland
Consultation on the Code
The Fundraising Regulator is currently reviewing the Code of Fundraising Practice and will not be updating the current code standards during this period, unless essential. Some standards may be affected by changes to UK law, for more information see our legal note.
They are reviewing the code as the first full review was in October 2019 and so much has changed since then - technology, legislation, fundraising behaviour and society as a whole.
You don't need to respond to all parts of the consultation, you can just respond to the parts relevant to your work.
The code consultation is now open. Please respond by 1 December 2023.
