Struggling with data protection? Our research has shown you’re not alone. Our new Data Protection Fundamentals series is here to make compliance simple, practical and affordable. We’re delighted to undertake this project partnership with NICVA to help the community and voluntary sector in Northern Ireland with its data protection awareness and confidence.

What is Data Protection Fundamentals?

The ICO is the UK's independent regulator for data protection and privacy rights. We ensure that organisations comply with the law and protect people’s information rights. Through Data Protection Fundamentals, we’re bringing that expertise directly to you with a range of webinars, bite-sized blogs and resources that reflect the real-life data protection challenges you face.

Our dedicated Northern Ireland Affairs Team will guide you through each session and empower you to make informed decisions about how you handle personal data at every stage of your critical work.

What will you learn?

Earlier this year, we ran a survey to better understand the data protection needs of community groups and charities in Northern Ireland. Here’s what you told us you’d like to know more about:

  • Data retention – How long is too long to keep personal information?
  • Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 – What does this new law mean for you?
  • Lawful basis, consent, and privacy notices – When do you need consent and what must you tell people?
  • Artificial Intelligence – How do you use emerging technologies such as AI responsibly and lawfully?
  • Data sharing – How do you know when and how to share data safely?
  • Data security – How can you protect personal data from loss, misuse, or unauthorised access?

With 76% of respondents unsure about the changes introduced by the new Data (Use and Access) Act, Data Protection Fundamentals is here to help organisations, like yours, refresh and strengthen data protection governance practices. Our blogs and webinars will break down each topic into clear, actionable guidance that reflects the realities of working in small organisations.

Dates for the webinars will be released in the next few weeks and we will feature regular blogs and resources throughout 2026.

You can reach out to us with any questions you might have about Data Protection Fundamentals or anything data protection related by emailing [email protected].

We look forward to working with you all!
