Making time for governance in 2025

As we embark on a new year it is an opportune time to plan for governance.

A very simple tool to help your board with planning is to create a governance calendar.  This is a very practical but effective way for organisations to identify their key governance events and governance requirements for the year ahead.  It should then help you influence the agenda of your meetings, for example, you should be having the discussion about retiring/recruiting new board members several meetings before the AGM to allow you time to try and recruit the people with skills that you need.

Governance resources

We have a range of governance guidance notes based on many of our common enquiries.  We also have four online tutorials to help all small and medium sized charities with their financial governance.  Remember that financial governance is the collective responsibility of the board / committee. The Basic finance tutorial videos are available with ISL, BSL and also subtitles which can be translated into other languages.

Review

Taking time to review how effective your governance arrangements and performance have been may help you to identify where improvements could be made to be more effective.  The Code of Good Governance and its complementary resources, the Governance Health Check and  DIY Committee Guide have been designed to help you with this process.  The Developing Governance Group have organised workshops to help you get started using the Governance Health Check, see Governance Health Check Wednesdays

Bespoke governance training

Some boards prefer to reflect or enhance their practice by engaging in governance training to help board members understand their individual role as well as the role of the board collectively.  We can provide bespoke governance training for your board / committee either online or in person, daytime or evening, whichever is best suited to you.  If you’d like more information or guidance you can get in touch with us at [email protected]
