NICVA Member Spotlight

In Northern Ireland’s voluntary and community sector, collaboration isn’t just a buzzword - it can be a gamechanger. Two NICVA members, Mencap Northern Ireland and Caring Breaks, are working together in a way that could reshape how support is delivered to families caring for individuals with learning disabilities.

Innovation through partnership

This partnership is still in its early stages, but its approach is bold and forward-thinking. Caring Breaks moved into the Mencap Centre in August 2025 - not simply as tenants, but as collaborators with a shared vision: to create a truly integrated hub where families can access a continuum of support under one roof.

Rather than rushing into joint projects, the organisations are taking time to get to know each other better, establish strong foundations for working together and design collaboration that lasts. They are exploring opportunities, sharing learning, and identifying ways to combine their strengths in a way that benefits families without compromising their independence

Why this is different

What makes this partnership innovative is its strategic intent. It’s not about convenience or cost-saving - it’s about creating a model where services complement each other, offering families a seamless experience from early years through to adult care.

By co-locating and committing to shared learning, Mencap NI and Caring Breaks are breaking down barriers and setting an example of how collaboration can drive systemic change.

Shared learning and future vision

Both organisations bring unique expertise:

  • Mencap NI provides infrastructure, safeguarding, and a strong reputation for supporting individuals with learning disabilities.
  • Caring Breaks offers specialist respite services and deep experience in supporting carers.

Together, they are exploring joint training, peer learning for staff, and shared resources - all designed to strengthen the support available to families.

Looking ahead

The partnership is still evolving, but the ambition is clear: to build a collaborative hub that becomes an example of best practice. Plans include expanding services, developing joint advocacy initiatives, and ensuring sustainability so families can rely on this support for years to come.

Why this matters

It’s a story of innovation, compassion, and community, and has the potential to be a blueprint for the future of collaborative working in Northern Ireland.  NICVA is proud to support these two NICVA members on this collaborative journey:

“During challenging times our temptation is often to focus on our own organisation and who we support but collaborating more can also support sustainability.  The partnership between Mencap NI and Caring Breaks NI is an example of innovation in action—two organisations taking time to build trust, share learning, and create something that will have a lasting impact. We are proud to support and champion this kind of forward-thinking approach.” (Celine McStravick, CEO, NICVA)
