For years, the voluntary and community sector has advocated for a strategic Programme for Government backed by evidence and an accountable data framework. The status quo of entrenched poverty, health inequalities, and precarious funding cannot continue.
We welcome the PfG's recognition of our sector as a key partner and acknowledgment of how unpredictable funding has undermined our work. While sustainable funding models are promised, we need concrete action and meaningful progress. Our sector must have representation in the new Delivery Unit supporting public services reform—services we are integral to providing.
We're ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work—our teams understand these challenges better than anyone. But meaningful contribution requires investment. Our organisations are already stretched to breaking point, operating on minimal resources while facing maximum demand. With proper support, we can leverage our unparalleled community knowledge and expertise to drive effective solutions.
Complex problems require time to solve, but immediate challenges demand urgent attention: rising national insurance costs, the looming gap from departing UK shared prosperity funding, and diminishing access to essential core funding. We call on the NI Executive to implement a 12-month emergency support plan for our sector—without which, I fear for its very survival as a crucial pillar of civil society influence.
