This one-day workshop is part of the Community Empowerment Programme (CEP) and is only available to individuals living and/or working in the Belfast City Council area. It offers a practical introduction to facilitation. It focuses on the skills and approaches that help groups to work together effectively, share ideas and make decisions that reflect community priorities.
Overview of session
At this session participants will explore what it means to be a facilitator and how facilitation can strengthen inclusion in community settings.
Through group work, reflection and activities participants will practise key facilitation techniques such as active listening, questioning, summarising and managing group dynamics. The emphasis throughout is on learning by doing and connecting facilitation practice to real community situations.
The workshop also addresses some of the challenges that arise in facilitation, such as dealing with dominant voices, encouraging quieter participants, and maintaining focus in diverse groups. By working through examples and scenarios together, participants develop practical strategies for creating inclusive and productive group processes.

By the end of the session participants will
- Understand the role and principles of facilitation in supporting inclusive, participatory community development processes

The Community Empowerment Programme (CEP)
The Community Empowerment Programme is being delivered by the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA) and a network of community partners from across Belfast. It is one of the six key projects which are being delivered as part of the Belfast PEACEPLUS Local Community Action Plan. This project is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
Over the next three years this comprehensive initiative is designed to build community capacity across Belfast city, impacting 1,000 individuals and community organisations who live and operate across the Belfast City Council area.
