Almost anything can be given away to charities via A Good Thing. For example, in Northern Ireland a stack of Wooden pallets recently found a new home and if you’re a charity on the lookout for 2 external doors and can collect from near Lisburn, visit.
It takes just 30 seconds to create an account at www.agoodthing.org.uk/signup.
Once signed up, your charity will begin receiving email alerts about free items nearby. And for businesses looking for an ethical way to donate unwanted items, you can start to create listings to give your items direct to local charities.
Grantmaking Publications
Who are the Trustees behind grant-making trusts and foundations?
In 2024, PBE partnered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales to survey 2,194 trustees. 233 of the survey respondents chose “Grant Making Foundation” as a principal focus area of their work.
This report, commissioned by the Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF), focuses on these 233 trustees in England and Wales.
Findings reveal that, compared to trustees from across all sectors, trustees from grant-making trusts and foundations (GMTFs) are:
- Less likely to be under 50, and
- More likely to have household incomes exceeding £100,000
While these were the only statistically significant differences, it highlights that trustees from GMTF were more likely to belong to majority groups across most demographic characteristics including sex, ethnicity, and disability compared to trustees across all sectors presenting both opportunities and challenges in ensuring that trustee boards across the sector reflect the diversity of the communities they serve.
ACF’s Foundations in Focus 2025 report
The Association of Charitable Foundations’s new report, Foundations in Focus, brings together UKGrantmaking data and expert insights on the key drivers shaping foundation giving in 2023-2024 – a year marked by continued increases in demand for funding.
Key findings include:
- £8.2bn in grants were made by foundation in 2023-2024 – a 12% increase on the previous year, continuing a trend of year-on-year growth
- Rising demand for charities’ services and the impact of inflation meant foundations had to increase spending just to maintain support levels
- Application volumes surged, with some foundations reporting up to 400% more applications than in previous years
- Foundations responded by spending more, launching new programmes, and streamlining processes to meet need
- Some are drawing down endowments faster than they can rebuild them, raising questions about the long-term capacity to sustain support.
