Celia Currie, Stakeholder and Policy Manager for Fundraising Regulator(FR) in NI gives an update on changes to the FR board and shares some useful resources for charities in NI.

As you may already know, the Fundraising Regulator has a dedicated representative board member for Northern Ireland, Lisa Caldwell. Lisa works closely with me in my role, as Stakeholder and Policy Manager, to make sure we continue to increase knowledge of the Fundraising Regulator’s work and to support strong fundraising regulation in Northern Ireland.

Changes to the board

Our board is currently undergoing some changes that I wanted to share with you. Four board members, who have been on our board since the Fundraising Regulator was set up, are coming to the end of their terms of appointment, David Cunningham, Sacha Deshmukh, Jill Thompson and Jenny Williams. In place of these members, we have recently appointed four new members to join the board: Paul Amadi, Anne Heal, Nick Jones, and Girish Menon who will start their roles in April 2025. You can find out more about these new board members on our website.

There have also been some new appointments to our Standards Committee and also to our Complaints and Investigations Committee, of which Lisa is a member. You can find out more about our committees and these new members on our website.

Useful Resources

I was delighted to be invited to speak with Volunteer Now at a recent event as part of NICVA’s Funding February. The session “Fundraising for Volunteers” on 6 February received several questions from charities about the differences between ‘on behalf of’ and ‘in aid of’ volunteer fundraising. Therefore, I thought it would be useful to share the guidance we have on our website that shows the differences between the two and provides advice both for volunteers and organisations working with volunteer fundraisers.

I also wanted to share a recent blog that has been posted on our website from our Head of Policy, Paul Winyard, which outlines the differences between a community interest company (CIC) and a charity. As more CICs across Northern Ireland, England and Wales have been undertaking fundraising activity, the Fundraising Regulator has received several enquiries about their fundraising. Paul’s blog may therefore be useful as it outlines the differences that donors need to be aware of.
