Since its founding in 1999, Cancer Lifeline has worked tirelessly to be a sanctuary and source of strength for individuals and families facing some of the most difficult times of their lives following a cancer diagnosis.
To commemorate this incredible journey, Cancer Lifeline hosted a celebratory event on 23 October at their welcoming space on Alliance Avenue. This special gathering brought together long-time supporters, past and current members, community partners, and local residents to reflect and reminisce on the organisation’s remarkable legacy, and celebrate the local volunteers who helped establish the charity. Guests shared memories and paid tribute to the founders and early volunteers who championed a vision for a dedicated support centre that continues to make a powerful impact.
Cancer Lifeline is truly unique, as it is managed by local people, all of whom are living with cancer and understand what those facing cancer are going through. When people come for support, they have the opportunity to meet and talk to others who have been through the same experience. The charity offers a range of one-to-one and group support programmes, including counselling, complementary therapies, welfare benefits advice, male and female support groups, bereavement support, stress management, relaxation workshops, and wellbeing mornings – all at no cost to families.
The organisation is often described as a “lifeline,” a fitting reflection of its role in helping people find a sense of peace, hope, and community during some of the most challenging times in their lives.
Reflecting on the journey to this milestone, Cancer Lifeline acknowledges the many challenges they have faced over the years, but through the support of local people, businesses, funders, and colleagues in the community, voluntary and statutory sectors, they have created and developed a welcoming, safe, calm, and peaceful space for people facing a very difficult time in their lives.
The Cancer Lifeline team look forward to the next chapter of the charity and continuing to support and advocate for the people of North Belfast.
NICVA is honoured to celebrate Cancer Lifeline’s achievements and its unwavering commitment to the people of North Belfast. We extend our congratulations to Cancer Lifeline on 25 incredible years and encourage everyone to support this invaluable organisation, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word about their essential work.
